Organic Skin Care for Aging Skin: Avoid these Ingredients

Depending on who you’re talking to, the word organic can mean different things. If you talk to someone in the food industry, they’ll think you’re talking about products that do not contain pesticides or growth hormones. In the skin care industry, it refers to products that do not contain artificial ingredients, petroleum-based ingredients or other unsafe ingredients. Nevertheless, some skin care products that are marketed as natural take an even more global scope to the meaning of the word and use it when referring to products that aren’t so natural. Their logical rides on the fact that petroleum isn’t a synthetically produced product and doesn’t take into consideration the fact that it is more detrimental than helpful. So how can you protect yourself from mislabeled products? Simply make it a habit to read the labels before purchasing the product.

Ingredients to Look out for in your Anti Aging Skin Care Products

The main idea behind anti aging products is fighting the aging process. However, the following ingredients can actually speed up skin aging and lead to wrinkles, dull skin and other skin problems. Make sure to check the labels before you purchase any organic skin care product.

*Synthetic Colors

Synthetic colors are made using coal tar and contain heavy metal salts. These components may produce free radicals and lead to eye wrinkles and dull skin, so if you want an effective anti wrinkle cream you should try and avoid all products that contain FD&C or D&C colors.

*Petrochemicals

This group of ingredients is derived from crude oil. Petrochemicals coat your skin and make it impossible for your body to eliminate toxins. Because it is difficult to eliminate toxins your body may experience dull skin, allergies, and clogged pores.

Avoid anti aging creams that contain mineral oil, paraffin and petrolatum. This is especially important if you have oily or combination skin.

*Sulfates

These components are usually found in soaps, detergents and cleansers. If you have a hard time finding them listed in the ingredients list, look for their alias: sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. Sulfates are known to dry out the skin and cause rashes.

*Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats)

These components are used in conditioning products. However, they have been linked with antibiotic resistance. Avoid products that contain benzalkonium chloride, cetrimonium chloride and cetrimonium bromide, among others.

*Alcohol

Alcohol should not be an ingredient in any type of wrinkle treatment because it dehydrates the skin and promotes the development of wrinkles. Stearyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol are the only two alcohol ingredients that your skin care product should contain.

These isn’t a complete list of the ingredients you need to avoid, but it is a good start. All you have to do is a bit more research, and you’ll be able to find the best wrinkle creams out there.

However, not everyone has time to spare, so we’ve done some of the research for you.
