The Start of Acne Outbreaks

Acne outbreaks are the first stages that the dermis goes through due to the over-production of sebum. This may be due to different factors, but hormonal alterations and stress can be the trigger of excess sebum output. Larger numbers of sebaceous glands are found on the mid-back, chest, forehead, nose and chin which can explain why these areas are more affected by acne.

Sebaceous glands are found deep inside the skin. Each gland is linked to a follicle with a tiny hair. The sebaceous gland releases an oily substance called sebum that lubricates the follicle and surrounding skin. Sebaceous glands are found in just about any where on the body.

Sebaceous glands vary in size and are stimulated to release sebum by hormones, specifically androgen hormones. In males and females, androgens are also produced by the adrenal glands. During puberty and stressful situations, the adrenal glands release an surplus of hormones causing an enlargement of the oil glands.

A blockage of the follicle can occur due to the accumulation of sebum and dead skin cells. The blockage forms blemishes such as whiteheads and blackheads which are the two most frequent comedones.

Propionibacterium acnes are microbes that are a part of the dermis’ biological defense mechanism. The intention is to prevent attacks from other harmful bacteria. P. Acnes become trapped within the follicle or pore if these are clogged. The skin can become inflamed and irritated because P. acnes change their chemical structure within a blocked follicle.

The effects of acne blemishes

Skin blemishes such as acne can have a number of consequences like red, puffy, sensitive or even itchy skin.

Acne vulgaris is the most common type of acne. It can have different intensities. The most common comedones (whiteheads and blackheads) are usually characteristics of mild acne stages.

More severe cases are usually identified by big painful masses under the skin. These masses are called cysts or nodules and are the most usual types of severe acne. Cysts or nodules can rupture, creating a big opening in the skin, which can lead to acne scarring.

Light, intermediate and severe acne can have an impact on your dermis. Picking and scratching of the infected areas can provoke more skin blemishes.

Patients are often not aware that irritation and inflammation of skin blemishes can be self inflicted events. Smooth, supple and blemish-free surfaces are attained by the proper care and attention to your skin.
